About the Artist

David Okonkwo is a contemporary abstract painter known for confident, large-scale works in which colour itself becomes the subject. Working from his studio in Lagos, he builds expansive fields of pigment that carry warmth, tension, and emotion.

His practice developed from drawing and design into pure abstraction, where broad gestures and layered blocks of colour replace detail. He treats each canvas as a field in which a few strong tones can hold an entire wall.

David's paintings have been exhibited in Lagos and in group shows internationally, and are collected by buyers looking for a modern statement piece for living rooms, offices, and open-plan spaces.

Artistic Approach

David applies paint in generous, deliberate sweeps, often contrasting a dominant field with a single darker or warmer accent. He works quickly at first to establish composition, then slowly refines edges and density so the colour reads as both bold and controlled.

Using acrylic and selected oil passages on canvas, sometimes with pronounced texture, he creates depth through overlapping colour rather than line. Every painting is hand-painted individually, and the same design recreated by hand will carry slight, natural differences.
