About the Artist

Aiko Tanaka is a contemporary Japanese artist whose work explores the profound beauty of imperfection and transience. Born and raised in Kyoto, Japan's ancient cultural capital, Aiko grew up surrounded by zen gardens, tea ceremonies, and the timeless aesthetics of wabi-sabi philosophy.

After graduating from the Kyoto City University of Arts with a degree in Japanese Painting, Aiko spent years studying traditional nihonga techniques before developing her own distinctive style that blends ancient Japanese aesthetics with contemporary abstract expression.

Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries across Tokyo, Kyoto, and New York, and her work is held in private collections throughout Asia, Europe, and North America.

Artistic Approach

Aiko's artistic practice is deeply rooted in the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi — the appreciation of imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness. Each painting is a meditation on these principles, created through a slow, deliberate process that embraces accidents and allows the materials to speak.

Working primarily with acrylic and texture paste on canvas, Aiko builds up multiple layers over weeks or even months. She uses palette knives, brushes, and even her hands to create rich, tactile surfaces that invite close inspection and reward prolonged viewing.
